Welcome to West Pennine Windsurfing Club, possibly the best windsurfing club in the North West of England. Our club is also suitable for wing foiling and lighter wind activities such as stand-up paddleboarding and canoeing/kayaking. We're located in the Pennines above Rochdale, Lancashire, so we're convenient for both Manchester and West Yorkshire. We offer clean wind, cleaner water and a great clubhouse with hot showers. Annual membership is great value with opportunities for board storage and we offer temporary day membership for prospective new members. So if you're learning, still trying to crack that carve gybe or need somewhere to practice your flakas, get in touch and come for a sail!
Booking System - Members, please use the button above to book your visit. Visitors please contact us.
Tenerife Trip - see how it went here . So well, some of us have already booked for Oct/Nov 2026!

Recent Health & Safety info - Could Cold Water Shock happen to you? Have you heard of Surfer's Ear?
Magazines - 'Boards' ceased several years ago. The final print edition of 'Windsurf' magazine was issued January/February 2025, though it's still available online here. Meanwhile, if you want a printed magazine you may wish to give Windsurfer a try. It's described as a "bi-annual coffee table publication, lauding the culture and personalities behind the greatest sport in the world." It's £19 per 140 page issue.
Water Level - as of 12th December the reservoir was full at last!
Webcam - If the webcam image is blurred just click on 'twitch' in the bottom right hand corner. We believe recent problems with the webcam have now been resolved - thanks Ian and Tom Taylor! Just the micro-switch on the anemometer still to replace, hence the graph dropping to zero.
Working Party 26 October - we hoped an extra hour in bed as the clocks changed would encourage a big turnout of volunteers. Alas no! See how we got on anyway.
Ever fancied trying Fleetwood? See details.
Or maybe you'd like to windsurf in the Netherlands - read a blog here with photos and some recommended locations.
Ridley - series 2 of the detective drama returned to ITV in August. Our clubhouse was used as the main character's home!
Social Weekend at the Club - we opted for a low key event in late July because of the low water level. No one camped in the end, but a gaggle of us turned out windsurfing, wingfoiling and paddleboarding, intermingled with plenty of time to chat and enjoy drinks and a barbecue.
Ullswater weekend mid-July - alas, the wind didn't blow but the sun shone, so it was a good weekend away. We stayed again at a caravan/camp site on the lake shore perfect for paddleboarding, canoeing and swimming and good for walks and mountain biking too. See photos
Anglesey Action - 27th June looked like this.

Working Party, Social and Sail - We crammed a lot in on 22nd June and again 17th August! Lots of jobs - road repairs, paving, vegetation next to road, weeds in some of the car park and we even got the grass mowed too. Reward came in the form of a barbecue. Thanks Eddie & Angela - the standard has been upped and it was very sociable! And finally a luck few windsurfed and wingfoiled - see here.

Windfoil Coaching - Dave and John travelled to Yorkshire Dales Sailing Club 8th June because it has more water than us. An RYA Coach delivered some useful pointers and gave video feedback. Conditions were heroic though - windfoiling is usually a light wind option and Force 5 to 6 isn't that!
AGM & Working Party - A multitude of jobs were done after the meeting - road repairs, painting in the changing rooms, weed burning, vegetation taming, boat and buoys and cleaning indoors.
Great to be on the water again! Here are some photos of a mild, sunny and windy day with 6 members making the most of it.
Breaking the ice - see photos of 3 hardy paddleboarders and the snowy scenery on 11th January.
2026 AGM - Our Annual General Meeting will take place 11am Sunday 22 March, followed by a simple lunch then a Working Party. Looking forward to a better year - we have a full reservoir and see our 2026 Events Programme to get you in the mood!
Membership - full year subs run 1st April to 31st March 2026. We reduce them by 25% every 3 months, so just 25% from 1st January. See How to Join, or contact our
Day Tickets - cost £15 per person (not board), which is broadly in line with comparable clubs and West Kirby. A maximum of 3 day tickets are allowed in a year.
Shoutbox - To register for the shoutbox, if you're new to the club, or a prospective new member, or maybe you've just forgotten your password, then please
Is it safe to go in the sea? After heavy rain sewers may spill into rivers, which then discharge into the sea. You can get live updates to see if this may impact on your coastal sailing - check here. Bathing Water Classifications are published for England's beaches ranging from poor to sufficient, then good and excellent. In 2025 Fleetwood managed a good rating, but West Kirby and Fraisthorpe were just sufficient. See the full list here.

Wingfoil Coaching - we held improver coaching in 2024 and hoped to run a beginner session in 2025 but the reservoir level was too low for boat launching. See details here. Alternatively, if you prefer private tuition, this may also be available to members and non-members - click here for details. After you've had a lesson you can hire a wing from Robin Hood Watersports.

Wind-SUPs - members can now use 2 O'Shea inflatable wind-SUPs for paddleboarding, light wind windsurfing, or beginner windsurfing. Have a look when you visit. It means our Tabou Coolrider beginner windsurf boards are looking for new homes. Contact a committee member to make an offer.
Rules of the Road - ever been unsure who should give way on the water?

YouTube Channel - the Club now has its very own YouTube Channel, all thanks to Graham Snowdon. The channel can be found here. Don't be shy, upload videos to Google Drive here or to iCloud from apple devices here and send Graham an
Wing & Wind Foiling insurance - RYA now offers members free 3rd party insurance for both of these sports, as well as windsurfing. Please make sure you contact the RYA to activate cover if you intend to wing and / or foil, or you won’t be covered. See more.
Saturday mornings - please try to avoid arriving 8.45 to 9.10, or you may have to wait a few minutes while the parkrun gets started.

Many of our members use Facebook to stay in touch. You can see our Facebook group here and there's space to chat and share photos. You will need to join Facebook though. These photos were uploaded to Facebook by Chris Peartree and Andy Whale. We have lots of photos of events and recreational sailing on our Gallery pages too. Send us some of yours, or tell us when you upload them to Facebook and we may copy some from there.

In addition to windsurfing at Watergrove, you can also take part in these sports:
- Windfoiling
- Wing Surfing & Wing Foiling
- Stand Up Paddleboarding
- Canoeing & Kayaking
- Mountain Biking
- Remote Control Model Yachting
- Walks
- parkrun nearby
Our SUP, Wingfoiling, Windfoiling and Canoeing/Kayaking pages emphasise these sports are welcome, so we've been sure to include photos of them on our homepage to reinforce that message. It's particularly good to see more use being made of the reservoir, club and its facilities in light winds. We're gaining new members by diversifying in this way and it's generating a really nice atmosphere around the club generally. You can invite visitors to join you at the Club - those venturing on the water should pay £10 for a Day Ticket. You're also encouraged to join the Club's Facebook group, where you can post photos and videos of your visits and promote what we offer. And of course you can always
